When the infant twins Romulus and Remus were abandoned and left to die, it was Lupa — the great she-wolf — who found them. She had every reason to walk away; they were not her kind. But she saw their need before she saw their difference. She gathered them close, sheltered them with her warmth, and nursed them as her own — not out of obligation, but out of a love chosen freely across every boundary that might have kept them apart.

Her power and her tenderness were never separate. She was strong so she could be soft with them, standing as an unwavering shield between two helpless infants and a dangerous world. Her presence along was a promise: you are safe here.

She looked at two creatures entirely unlike herself — no fur, no paws, no howl — and saw vulnerable beings cut from the same cloth. Their suffering became her suffering; their joy, her joy.  She didn’t love Romulus and Remus because they belonged to her world. Her instinct to open herself to them was what build a world they could belong to.

Lupa endures as a symbol of what true guardianship looks like: fiercely protective, radically inclusive, and rooted in the belief that love isn’t defined by sameness — it’s defined by the courage to show up for whoever needs you most.
